"In a social environment that is ever crowded and impersonal, it is becoming increasingly important to reconsider the value of close personal relationships before we are driven to ask the forlorn question, Whatever happened to love?" -- Desmond Morris Why relationship coaching? What makes relationship coaching so effective is the focus on the relationship as the client rather than the individuals in the relationship. The relationship is actually viewed as a "living entity," and any conflict or discomfort in a relationship is a signal that the relationship is trying to create a new way of being. This emphasis on the relationship (rather than the individuals in the relationship) removes the blaming and resentment that invariably comes from traditional compromise techniques. This unique shift in perspective allows for greater clarity, evolution, and fulfillment in a relationship than traditional "couples counseling" or teambuilding techniques that emphasize little more than active listening and communication styles. Another distinguishing characteristic of relationship coaching is the acknowledgment that the vast majority of conflict within any kind of relationship cannot be resolved. What makes a relationship successful is the way that conflict is handled by those in relationship. This shift in focus again removes the emphasis from "he said, she said" active listening and compromise activities to an exploration of what the relationship is trying to create through the people in the relationship. New ways for working with (and yes, even valuing) conflict are created, paving the way for more fluid and honest communication and connection. What are some of the benefits of relationship coaching? What does a relationship coaching session look like? In a relationship coaching session, all members of the relationship are coached at the same time. In some cases, this coaching is augmented by individual coaching for each person in the relationship. A coaching session can occur over the phone or in person. After an initial intake session, coaching sessions are usually 30-60 minutes in length and take place on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. The clients decide what they would like to work on in each coaching session. A "fieldwork" assignment is co-created with the clients to put any new insights into action between coaching sessions. Initial relationship coaching agreements are for a period of three months, with the understanding that the clients decide how much coaching would be beneficial and for how long. How long does a formal relationship coaching series last? This varies depending on the need of the client. Coaching engagements typically last a minimum of three months. Should the client wish to continue coaching after the first three months, coaching can be done on a month-to-month basis until the needs of the client have been met. What about confidentiality? All content of relationship coaching sessions is held in strictest confidence. What are Dan Johnson's credentials and experience with executive coaching?
