Why have an executive coach? Leadership in the top management ranks is often a lonely business. It can be difficult to get accurate feedback, and it is often difficult to find a confidential, unbiased sounding board. Because it is challenging to improve leadership skills and job performance without input from others about strengths, development areas, opportunities, and workplace realities, many leaders choose to work with a coach on a development plan to achieve specific goals or a desired business result. The greatest impact on employee commitment, satisfaction, and ultimately their productivity is the employee’s boss. By enhancing the employee-boss relationship, clients gain employee commitment and discretionary effort, thereby positively impacting employee productivity and work environment. Executive coaching provides sustained improvement, reinforcement, and measurable progress toward a more healthy and productive workplace relationship with a client's boss, peers, and direct reports. Isn't a coach just someone who cheers you on from the sidelines? That's what I used to think. I had "auditioned" several coaches for a large corporation and found that many coaches were, in fact, sideline cheerleaders who would simply state motivational phrases and ask me to read motivational books each week. There was no focus, no measurable progress, and plenty of frustration on my part as the client. My coaching approach is different. The client identifies his or her goals to be reached through the coaching process. The client is held accountable for completing field work each week that move the client forward toward the goal. At any given time, the client and the coach can measure the progress made toward achieving a specific goal. As your coach, I am accountable for honoring your agenda for each coaching session, helping you see some of your strengths that you may over look, calling you on your resistances that keep you from moving toward your goals, providing an objective (and oftentimes intuitive) observation of what is actually taking place, and creating a safe space where you can just "be" during the coaching session.

What does a coaching session look like? Initial executive coaching agreements are for a period of six months, with the understanding that the client decides how much coaching would be beneficial and for how long. A coaching session can occur over the phone or in person. (The vast majority of all coaching sessions take place over the phone.) After the initial intake session, coaching sessions are usually 30-60 minutes in length and take place on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. The client brings his or her agenda to the coaching session. An on-the-job assignment is co-created with the client to put any new insights into action between coaching sessions. How long does a formal executive coaching relationship last? This varies depending on the need of the client. Coaching engagements typically last a minimum of six months. Should the client wish to continue coaching after the first six months, coaching can be done on a month-to-month basis until the client’s need has been met. What about confidentiality? All content of executive coaching sessions is held in strictest confidence. This content is NOT shared with your employer. What are Dan Johnson's credentials and experience with executive coaching?
