We often believe that reaching tour goals will lead to greater happiness (lasting positive emotion). But often this is not the case. Sound surprising? According to Ben Dean, Ph.D., the "hedonic treadmill" refers to our tendency to adjust rapidly to good or bad events in our lives. Emotions are fleeting, and we cannot sustain emotional highs or lows indefinitely. We eventually return to our baseline. We are back exactly where we started, like a runner on a treadmill. According to Dr. Dean, as we accumulate more material possessions and accomplishments, our expectations rise. (Yesterday's luxuries become today's necessities.) We continue to need more money or greater accomplishments to boost us into the upper reaches of our happiness range. As you savor the moments of this holiday season, remain present for the high points while recognizing that they cannot be sustained indefinitely. When experiencing the low points, find comfort in knowing that they too will pass. Most of all, stay present to fully experience the joy of your celebrated season. |
