Why have a coach?

Attorneys who utilize coaching services are often highly successful with their law practice.  They hire a coach to (1) help them be more successful with their practice, (2) reclaim a sense of balance and fulfillment in their lives, and/or (3) cultivate a sense of peace and optimism in the world around them.

Many forces exist that challenge an attorney in his or her role:

Attorneys are conditioned to see every conceivable snare and catastrophe that might occur in any transaction.  This view of life is hard to “shut off” and can often spill over into an attorney’s personal life.

Junior associates have high demands placed on them and believe they have little to no choice in the decisions that affect them. With little voice about their work, limited contact with their superiors, and virtually no client contact, these attorneys can suffer from burnout and depression.

The adversarial nature of the practice of law often results in a win-lose game with a focus on billable hours, take-no prisoners victories, and the bottom line.  This environment can lead to a sense of the water level constantly rising, with the attorney trying to swim as fast as possible just to keep his or her head above water.

Just as people use personal trainers for physical fitness, a coach helps clients live a life of balance and fulfillment by empowering the client to discover his or her own answers and then ACT on them, instead of merely protesting the life they are currently living.

What are some of the benefits of coaching for attorneys?

Coaching for attorneys leads to the following outcomes:

bulletAttorneys are more successful and satisfied with their professional role and career;
bulletHigh potential associates evolve into high functioning attorneys;
bulletA renewed enthusiasm for the practice of law;
bulletA greater sense of peace and well-being, enabling the attorney to function more clearly and productively;
bulletBalance and harmony between work and personal life.

How long does the formal coaching relationship last?

This varies depending on the need of the client.  Coaching engagements typically last a minimum of six months.  Should the client wish to continue coaching after the first six months, coaching can be done on a month-to-month basis until the client’s need has been met.

What about confidentiality?

All content of executive coaching sessions is held in strictest confidence.  This content is NOT shared with your firm.
